Substantial Internet Failure Impacts Numerous Websites and Applications
An extensive internet failure has disrupted dozens online platforms and apps globally, as users experiencing issues connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure platform.
The disrupted apps encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-managed platforms including its primary shopping platform and the Ring security home security firm.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected as well as its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues accessing the the tax authority website on the start of the week. Also in the UK, many Ring customers took to social media to report their security devices were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on particular platforms totaled the thousands for each platform.
Amazon reported that the problem originated in the east coast of the US at AWS, a section that provides vital online infrastructure for many businesses, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the biggest global web hosting service.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the United States. The cascading impact appeared to disrupt platforms around the world, and the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the same sites in multiple continents.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the problems started.
